Let me tell you a story about my wife. In 2007, she needed a new car. She found a great deal for a brand-new Honda Accord, priced at just $18,000 with a trade-in. As she wrote the check at the dealership, her fingers trembled because she had never written such a large check before. The next day, while driving, she turned to me with joy, saying how good it felt to be the owner of the car. However, her happiness was short-lived. Just a week later, she checked her bank account and saw that there was only $180 left. The sight filled her with immense sadness, a sadness that still lingers in my memory. The weight of that sadness overshadowed the joy of buying the car with cash.

I’ve always enjoyed thinking outside the box. After that incident, I wondered if there was a way to buy something with cash and still keep it. I laughed at myself, thinking I was asking for too much. I realized there’s nothing that lets your dollar do two jobs. I forgot about it until 2010, when my friend Jim Poe recommended Nelson Nash’s book, “Becoming Your Own Banker.” Reading it was a pivotal moment for me, an epiphany.
